Why Are Asphalt Shingles Still Popular?

The US asphalt shingles market rose above $7 billion in 2018. That number is projected to grow at more than 3.8% through 2025. Why the continued popularity?

​Homeowners are searching for more affordable and sustainable roofing materials. Not only have asphalt shingles been heavily tested to withstand the elements over time, but they're also produced in high volumes, making them cheaper for roofing contractors to install, maintain, and replace.

Are There Eco-Friendly Asphalt Singles?

​While asphalt shingles are energy efficient and have a high thermal resistance, they probably won't be at the top of the list for the average eco-friendly home owner. A typical asphalt roof contains hundreds of gallons of crude oil. And in terms of recyclability, about 10 million tons of asphalt shingles are tossed into landfills each year. ​For the most part, asphalt shingles that have run their course are neither widely recycled or biodegradable.

If you're mostly concerned about a more green roofing option, you should consider metal roofing - 100% recyclable and made up of at least 25% recycled materials. Old metal roofing panels and scraps can be appropriately recycled and used in other projects.

But none of this of course means that asphalt shingles aren't a good option, considering the many benefits they offer in pretty much any climate throughout the country.

Still A Great Option
Architectural Shingles vs. Regular Shingles

​Out of the three main types of asphalt shingles - 3-tab, architectural, and designer - architectural shingles have been the most popular choice for new construction. Compared to the other options, architectural shingles offer a thicker coating of asphalt, which lends to their durability. They also add more curb appeal.

Considering hurricane season here in Florida, architectural asphalt shingles have proven to withstand winds up to 120 MPH. Regular asphalt shingles might last with winds up to 80 MPH. Architectural shingles may even last up to 30 years with proper maintenance and under the right conditions.

Our favorite architectural asphalt shingle to install is the GAF Timberline HDZ® shingle, for a few reasons. The technologies used in the Timberline shingles make them highly wind and algae-resistant, and they are manufactured in a wide range of colors.

A 2019 survey commissioned by GAF of 380 real estate agents and certified appraisers of single family residential homes found that upgrading a roof with GAF Timberline® architectural shingles could increase the value of a home by an average of 10%.
